About Customercy

Why is it called “customercy”?

When we are a part of the national or global demand for food, water and electricity, we are called consumers. As a critical eye is turned to waste and consumption, the word “consumer” has taken on a negative connotation. If the word consumer was included, you might be filled with feelings of guilt and helplessness.

When we are patrons of local businesses with human needs and wants, we are called “customers.” We have customs and values that make us unique. The word “customer” originated in the early 1400’s to mean “one who customarily buys from the same tradesman or guild.” Even today, as we buy from a multitude of different vendors, stores and websites, we are still customers.

However, we are faced with way more options about where to buy from, what ingredients to avoid and what to buy. We are the professional buyers of our own households, but we do not have the financial or computational support that buyers for large companies have.

In order for customers to have the freedom to behave mercifully, by supporting ethical or sustainable companies, customers must first treat each other mercifully – by sharing information about how to best navigate the markets for food, clothing, furniture and consumables.
